Principal’s Message: National Hispanic Heritage Month September 15 – October 15, 2023
Dear Citrus Elementary Community:
Every year from September 15 through October 15, we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. The observance of National Hispanic Heritage Month first began under President Lyndon Baines Johnson in 1968, when it was known as Hispanic Heritage Week. The week was expanded by President Ronald W. Reagan in 1988 to cover the current 30-day period.
Our beautiful City of Fontana has a rich history of Hispanic and Latinx people making profound contributions in our community. ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ is proud to serve 33,000 students with 87% who identify as Hispanic or Latino/a/x.
During this month, may we take the time to celebrate the history, cultures, language, and contributions of Hispanics and Latinx people in our city and this country. This is an opportunity for us to demonstrate our commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity to our students, staff, and families. Additionally, it is important to affirm the culture of our students.
I encourage all to use this time to affirm our students’ identities. May we know our students by name, strength, and story! It is so important that we teach our students to be proud of who they are and where they come from.
Please join me in extending warmest wishes to our Hispanic community! ¡Celebra con orgullo el Mes de la Herencia Hispana!
Sincerely,
Michael McGirr, Principal
