SUBMITTALS Product data including design mix, method used, required environmental conditions and admixture limitations. Manufacturer's certificate that products meet or exceed specified requirements. DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING Store and protect products. Maintain packaged materials clean, dry and protected against dampness, freezing and foreign matter. ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS Maintain materials and surrounding air temperatures to minimum 40 degrees F prior to, during and 48 hours after completion of masonry work. MIX TESTS Test grout in accordance with Division 1, General Requirements. Submit design mix prepared by a California Registered Civil Engineer to testing laboratory and Architect for review. PRODUCTS MATERIALS Portland Cement: ASTM C150, Type I, II. Hydrated Lime: ASTM C207, Type S. Grout Aggregate: Section 2102A.2.1.2, CBC. Water: Clean and potable. Fly Ash: ASTM C618, Class F. Bonding Agent: WELDCRETE; Larsen Products Corp., Rockville, MD. THOROBOND; Thoro System Products, Newark, CA. SONOCRETE; Sonneborn Building Products, Hayward, CA. Or equal, as approved in accordance with Division 1, General Requirements for substitutions. Admixture: ASTM C494, water-reducing, at high lift grouting only, Sitka GroutAid for Brick and CMU shall be used. GROUT MIXES - PROPORTIONS BY VOLUME Fine Grout: 1 part Portland cement, loose damp sand in the amount of 2-1/4 to 3 times the sum of the volumes of the cementitious materials and 1/10 part hydrated lime. Sufficient water shall be added to grout to cause it to flow into all joints of the masonry. Coarse Grout: 1 part Portland cement, 21/4 to 3 parts sand times the sum of the volumes of the cementitious materials, 1 to 2 parts pea gravel times the sum of the volumes of the cementitious materials, 0 to 1/10 part lime. Grout Strength: 2000 psi minimum at 28 days, and conform to Section 2103A, California Building Code. Use Fine Grout for cavity behind cement masonry and brick veneer. Coarse grout for all filled-cell masonry. Use Fine Grout for grouting behind steel door frames. Mix 1 lb of grout aid per 100 lbs of cementitious materials. Limit fly ash content to 15 percent maximum. GROUT MIXING Thoroughly mix grout ingredients in quantities needed for immediate use in accordance with ASTM C476. Do not use antifreeze compounds to lower the freezing point of grout. CALIBRATING Proportion grout mixes by accurate volume measurements in accordance with Section 2103A.3, California Building Code. Maintain at the site, calibrated boxes or containers of such nature that quantities measured can be readily and accurately checked at any time. Proportion by shovel measure not permitted. STRENGTH Grout: Minimum compressive strength 2000 psi per CBC Section 2103A.3. EXECUTION TESTING AND INSPECTION Request inspection of spaces to be grouted. Masonry work shall be continuously inspected during laying and grouting by the Special Masonry Inspector certified by DSA, in accordance with Section 2105A.7, California Building Code. Testing shall comply with CBC Section 1705A.4. Required Testing: Refer to Division 1, General Requirements. PREPARATION Apply bonding agent to existing surfaces. Plug cleanout holes to prevent leakage of grout materials. Brace masonry for wet grout pressure. INSTALLATION Install grout in accordance with Section 2104A, California Building Code. Work grout into masonry cores and cavities to eliminate voids. Use coarse grout in cavities 2 inches wide or more and in all filled cell construction. Do not displace reinforcement while placing grout. Remove grout spaces of excess mortar. Fill door frame voids solid with grout. CURING When atmosphere is extremely dry, dampen the masonry surfaces with a light fog spray for three days during the curing period for the mortar. Use a nozzle regulated fog spray sufficiently to dampen but not of such quantities to cause water to flow down over masonry.
